Privacy Policy
1. Who is responsible
Deadfall is operated by Lucas Moeller in Wisconsin, USA. For any privacy question or request, email deadfallapp@gmail.com. This policy explains what we collect, why, who it's shared with, and your choices. It's part of our Terms of Use.
2. What we collect
Account information
- Your name, username, email address and password. Passwords are stored only as a one-way hash; we can't see them.
- Account details such as when you joined, when you were last active, your role, and which version of these policies you accepted.
Things you add
- Map content: waypoints, tracks, lines, areas, offline areas you save (saved on your device), rifle and bow profiles.
- Hunting log entries: times, your spot, your path if you record it, weather, moon and sun data, sightings, harvests, other hunters seen, notes and photos.
- Landowner permission records and letters: owner names and mailing addresses come from public county tax records; any landowner contact details or conditions you type in are stored in your account.
- Social content: your profile (photo, home area, bio, species), posts, harvests, comments, likes, recipes, photo gallery, friends, blocks and reports.
- Direct messages and photos you send in them.
- Hunting groups: groups you create or join, your role, whether you share your location with the group, and the chat messages, photos, pins, map items and hunts you share there.
- Hunting partners you tag on a hunt (and hunts other people tag you in).
- Stand and blind details, trail camera photo logs, licenses and tags you track. These are private to your account unless you share a pin to a group.
- If you turn on push notifications, a notification address for your device from your browser's push service, and which kinds of notifications you want.
- Support messages you send us.
Location
- Your phone's GPS location is used on your device to show you on the map and for tools like "shot here," wind, and navigation. It is not sent to our server unless you save something with a location (a waypoint, track, hunt, photo, or a post where you choose "Exact spot"), or you turn on location sharing.
- Location sharing is off by default. When you turn it on, we store your latest position and the audience you picked (Public, all friends, select friends, or members of the groups you choose) so those people can see it. If you choose "approximate," others only see a rough area.
- Walked trail. While sharing is on (and not approximate) and you are recording a track or a hunt path, we also store the trail of points you've walked since sharing started so your audience can see where you've already been. The trail is cleared each time you start sharing again, and your position and trail stop being shown when sharing ends; we delete the stored position and trail when you turn sharing off.
- Sharing ends automatically when your chosen time runs out.
- For posts, the default location is your county only.
Photos
- Photos are resized on your device, which removes the hidden data cameras add (including GPS). Our server also strips that data from photos it receives.
- For the photo gallery, the app reads the photo's GPS and date on your device first so it can pin the photo to your map. That spot is private to you unless you turn on "Show the spot."
Technical information
- Our server receives your IP address and basic request details (like which page or feature you used) when you use Deadfall. We use them to run and protect the Service (for example, to stop repeated password guessing).
- The app stores your sign-in token, settings, drafts, offline map tiles and unsynced changes in your browser's local storage on your device. We don't use advertising or tracking cookies, and we don't use analytics services.
3. How we use it
- To run Deadfall: show your maps and content, sync across your devices, deliver posts, messages and notifications to the people you choose, and compute things like badges and hunting insights.
- To send account and service emails: password resets, notices of unread messages (you can turn these off), replies to support requests, and important changes.
- To keep Deadfall safe: review reported content and accounts, enforce the Terms, prevent abuse, and secure the Service.
- To fix problems and improve features.
We do not sell or rent your personal information, use it for advertising, or share it with data brokers.
4. Who can see what
- Other users see what you choose to share: your profile, and posts, photos, recipes and hunt logs set to Friends or Public. Exact spots and paths of hunts are never shown to others; photo spots only if you turn on "Show the spot"; post locations only as precisely as you choose.
- Group members see what you post in a group and your name, photo and role in it. If you share your location with a group, its members see it as described above.
- Hunting partners you tag see that hunt (its date, species, harvest and notes, but not your exact spot or path) in their log, and are notified. People who tag you are shown to you the same way; you can ask them to remove the tag.
- Admins (the operator and anyone the operator makes an admin) can see account details and may review content, including messages, when needed to respond to a report, enforce the Terms, keep people safe, or fix a problem. We limit this to what's needed.
- Service providers that help run Deadfall, only to provide their service:
- DigitalOcean (server hosting and backups).
- Brevo (sending email): receives your email address and the email content.
- Your browser's push service (for example Google for Chrome and Android, Apple for iPhone, Mozilla for Firefox), only if you turn on push notifications. It delivers notifications to your device. The notification text is encrypted so that only your device can read it; the push service sees when a notification is sent to your device.
- Map and data providers. To show maps and data, your device connects directly to Esri (ArcGIS), the U.S. Geological Survey, the Wisconsin DNR, the National Weather Service and OpenStreetMap (search and place names). Those providers receive your IP address and the map area or coordinates being looked up, and handle it under their own policies.
- Legal reasons. We may disclose information if required by law or valid legal process, or if we believe in good faith it's needed to protect someone's safety, to investigate fraud or abuse, or to protect the Service's or our rights.
- If Deadfall changes hands, your information may transfer to the new operator under this policy, and we'll tell you first.
5. How long we keep it
- Your content stays until you delete it or delete your account.
- When you delete your account, we delete your account, content, photos, direct message conversations you were part of, friendships, and hunts from the live system right away. Copies in backups are deleted as the backups roll over: nightly server backups are kept 14 days, and hosting provider backups for 7 days.
- Group chat messages and items you shared to a group stay in the group after you leave it, until you or a group owner deletes them. When you delete your account, your group messages and shared items are deleted too.
- Push notification addresses are deleted when you turn notifications off on a device, when the push service tells us the address stopped working, or when you delete your account.
- Support messages and reports may be kept as long as needed to handle them and keep records of safety issues.
6. Security
We use HTTPS encryption in transit, hashed passwords, a firewall, key-only server access and regular security updates. No system is perfectly secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security. Messages are not end-to-end encrypted. If we learn of a breach that affects your personal information, we'll notify you as the law requires.
7. Your choices and rights
- Access and update: edit your name, email and profile in the app.
- Delete: delete individual content, or your whole account in More > Account > Delete account.
- Export: export your waypoints and tracks as GPX in More > Sync & export. For a copy of other data, email us.
- Control sharing: choose visibility for each post, photo, recipe and hunt; choose who sees your location or turn sharing off; leave groups; remove partner tags from your hunts; limit who can message you; block people.
- Push notifications: turn them on or off per device and choose which kinds in More > Notifications, or in your phone's settings.
- Emails: turn off unread-message emails in Messages > settings. Account and security emails can't be turned off while you have an account.
- Depending on where you live, you may have other rights, such as to request a copy of your data or correct it. Email deadfallapp@gmail.com and we'll respond within 30 days. We won't treat you differently for making a request.
8. Age
Deadfall is for people 18 and older. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you think someone under 18 has an account, email deadfallapp@gmail.com and we'll delete it.
9. Where data is stored
Deadfall is run from the United States and your information is stored on servers in the United States.
10. Changes
We may update this policy. For meaningful changes, we'll ask you to review and accept the new version in the app. The effective date at the top shows when it last changed.
